When is insurance is not insurance?

If you work with a reputable piano moving company, you shouldn’t have to worry in the unlikely event that something goes wrong. That being said, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. So, always ask for proof of in-transit and public liability insurance to ensure that the company will be able to pay for any damages to either the piano or the property.

Insurance is not always what it seems

A very common response from a removal company or van man is to say they are “insured under the motor policy”.

So, how is that bad?

It is pretty bad. It means that they are not insured at your property, and in-transit any single item would be covered on just a standard content policy, which usually lies between £500 and £2,000. This clearly is stretching the term “fully insured” – this would not even cover a repair on a piano never mind replacement or damage to your property.

The van hire predicament

The second most common one we have seen is when the removal company or van man turns up with a hired van. Hired vans are not covered at all – van hire companies do not cover you for in-transit, so your piano or property is likely to have zero insurance. A professional piano moving company may have their own insurance policy, but they would have to transfer details on every single hire. Always ask to see the insurance policy as you’ll be surprised who has it and who does not!
